The SOAR Benefits Specialist must be able to work in the community and meet individuals experiencing homelessness where they are, including outdoors and in emergency shelters. The SOAR Specialist acts as a primary contact and liaison between clients applying for disability benefits and the Social Security Administration to ensure a quality and complete application to increase the likelihood of an approval for income benefits. Other populations or housing support services may be assigned as secondary purposes when needed.

The SOAR Benefits Specialist will assist individuals in applying for Social Security disability benefits using the SOAR model.

The SOAR Benefits Specialist must be able to work in the community and be comfortable meeting displaced individuals where they are. This position requires at least 2 years of experience working directly with displaced individuals who have a serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders.

The Coordinator for Public Benefits will work with young adults experiencing homelessness to access emergency and long-term benefits. The core of the benefit assistance will include advocacy for acquiring and navigating cash assistance, food stamps (SNAP), Medicaid, and disability-income programs (SSI and WeCARE). All SSI work (initial applications and reconsiderations) uses the SOAR model.
