my Social Security: SSA Online Benefits Management Portal

The SOAR TA Center encourages the use of a great service offered by the Social Security Administration, my Social Security.

There are a number of advantages to using my Social Security, SSA’s online benefits portal that currently boasts over 17,000,000 users. For example, people who are working can track and verify their earnings and also get estimates about future benefits.

More relevant to SOAR workers, once applicants start receiving benefits they can easily and quickly get a letter with proof of their benefits, change their address and start or change their direct deposit information.

As you know, many times recipients are asked to show proof that they are receiving SSI/SSDI benefits and in the past this proof has been slow to get in the mail. This letter, sometimes called a "budget letter," a "benefits letter," a "proof of income letter," or a "proof of award letter,“ is one of the things that recipients can now receive instantly online!

Best of all, creating a my Social Security account is easy. People are asked to provide basic personal information and give answers to some easy questions that only they would know (for security purposes). To complete the process they are asked to create a username and password that they will use to access their accounts.

It is important to note, applicants are only able to create a my Social Security account using their own personal information and people are not able to create or use accounts on behalf of other people, even with written permission. For guidance on assisting an applicant, see our helpful flowchart: Creating a my Social Security Account for Applicants.
