SOAR Success in Michigan
Submitted by Stacie Mattson, a SOAR-trained practitioner working with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians
I was contacted by a tribal member’s sister, who had become his caretaker since the passing of their mother. Her brother, John*, has special needs but was previously denied disability. She asked me to assist them in reapplying for benefits.
This case was tough as there had never been any medical documentation. We had to have testing done, so it took a decent amount of time to complete. It’s important for SOAR practitioners to remember to be patient and to follow up with any physicians or supporting professionals.
Ultimately John was approved for benefits. This is huge for him and his sister, as she was only able to support him with the money their mother left. This money is not unlimited, so now when it runs out, he will have income to support his daily life.
